YIEDIE is a 5 year programme that targets young people between the ages of 17 & 24 who are out of school and unemployed and who are interested in construction. The programme offers free training in technical construction skills, entrepreneurship, life skills and financial literacy.
The inaugural event in Accra took place in the form of a float through the streets of Ofankor, Pokuase, Fiise, and Amasaman. The project team, made up of staff and volunteers from YES-Ghana and its implementing partner, Opportunities Industrialization Centre – Ghana (OICG), interacted with shop attendants, residents, drivers and commuters. Prominent youth leaders and youth group members of the three communities joined the float to encourage and inform their peers about YIEDIE. The float rounded up at the Amasaman park where young people stopped by to be screened by Field officers.
An awareness creation durbar was also organised at Teiman to introduce YIEDIE to the enthusiastic young people with the community. This event took place at the Teiman School Park. Many young people participated in the event through dancing competitions and games while the project team educated them on YIEDIE. The Assembly man and Youth organisers of the Teiman community encouraged the youth to take this opportunity to build a better future for themselves in order to support their families in the near future. Many interested participants who registered unto YIEDIE went home elated and invited their siblings and friends who were consequently screened during the event. Guardians and passers-by who expressed interest in YIEDIE picked up flyers and made enquiries on behalf of their wards at home.
YIEDIE is part of the Youth Forward Initiative and being implemented by Global Communities, Youth Empowerment Synergy, OICG, African Aurora Business Network, Artisans Association of Ghana and HFC Boafo.
