In commemoration of the 2017 International Youth Day (IYD), YES-Ghana is hosting a Youth Forum on the theme “Young people as partners in sustainable development”. The forum seeks to promote the SDGs and make available an opportunity for young people and various other stakeholders to discuss pertinent issues affect their development.
The global theme for the IYD 2017 is “Youth Building Peace”. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development committed to fostering peaceful and inclusive societies and affirmed “sustainable development cannot be realised without peace and security”. Goal 16 of the SDGs aims to ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels. Young people’s inclusion in the peace and security agenda and in society more broadly, is key to building and sustaining peace. The process of social inclusion for youth, including participation in decision-making as well as access to quality education, health care and basic services promotes their role as active contributors to society and affords young people with opportunities to reach their potential and achieve their goals. When youth are excluded from political, economic and social spheres and processes, it can be a risk factor for violence and violent forms of conflict. Therefore, identifying and addressing the social exclusion of young people is a precondition for sustaining peace.
YES-Ghana has been at the forefront of youth action for the IYD celebrations in Ghana since 2005 and has conducted various action programmes to mobilise youth and youth-serving organisations on specific national development issues. The Youth Forum on Sustainable Development therefore builds on more than a decade’s experience. The Forum will focus on the 17 SDGs, their impact on young people and communities, and the contributions young people can make to their achievement locally and nationally. Through a mix of approaches, including plenaries, breakout sessions, and report-backs, the Forum promises to be very interactive and youth driven.
The forum takes place at the SRC Conference Hall, Ho Technical University on 11th August, 2017 at 9:30am prompt. Admission is free.
