YES-Ghana operates as an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation incorporated according to the laws of Ghana. The Board of Directors is the highest decision-making authority on all aspects of the organisation’s operations, including policy direction, vision and strategy. A Management Team, currently comprising the Executive Director, Head of Programmes, and Head of Finance and Administration, lead the day-to-day running of the organisation based on the direction of the Board of Directors. YES-Ghana’s success to date has been largely due to its dedicated staff, totalling 32 in 2018, including full-time and part-time personnel, external consultants, and volunteers (both local and international) who work with the Management in pursuance of programme objectives.
Financial Management & Operations
YES-Ghana has a robust financial system grounded in a Finance and Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual. The comprehensive Manual establishes points of reference for all the areas of the financial system consisting of cash and treasury management, expenditure control management, property and equipment, procurement and inventory management, payroll management, grants and sub grantee management, chart of accounts and operating software, budgeting and budgetary control, financial reporting, and audit framework.
It is the policy of YES-Ghana to apply the accrual basis of accounting for the entity wide financial statements during the fiscal year. All financial and accounting data at YES-Ghana are processed using the latest version of QuickBooks. Implementation of our sound financial and accounting systems over the years has ensured that all transactions are executed only upon proper approval and authorisation, that valid transactions are recorded accurately to permit preparation of financial statements which comply with internationally accepted accounting standards, including the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), and that all assets are safeguarded in a healthy control environment. Since 2005, YES-Ghana’s financial management function has undergone annual independent external audits, supported by a resilient internal audit system. In 2017, a Micro Assessment conducted by global audit firm KPMG concluded that YES-Ghana has no significant financial or operating weakness that could pose unacceptable negative fiduciary and/or reputational risk.
The finance and accounting function is driven by a dedicated team both in the main office and in project locations across the country. Aside its main office in East Legon, YES-Ghana has five project offices in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, Tema and Ashaiman, as well as other coordination points and partner locations in all regions of the country. Financial management and operations functions are synchronised in all locations to ensure that supervision and control are strictly applied across the board. Added to our central role as convenor of the Voices of Youth Coalition which comprises over 350 youth organisations across the country, YES-Ghana affirms itself as a truly national organisation capable of rapid programme deployment and project implementation in all districts of Ghana.
