The Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Employment (YIEDIE) Programme is designed to increase employment and entrepreneurship in the construction sector amongst disadvantaged youth.
Ghana has a high rate of youth unemployment, yet the country’s construction sector is booming. Many Ghanaian youth lack the necessary technical skills, certification and networks to succeed in this sector while several Ghanaian construction companies are losing out to foreign construction companies due to lack of capacity.
YIEDIE is an innovative response to this situation and aims to train young people aged 17 – 24, giving them skills they need to take advantage of economic opportunities in the construction sector. The programme also aims to increase the capacity and coordination of stakeholders in the construction sector as a whole.
Ghanaian youth will benefit from having job opportunities and higher income while stakeholders such as private firms, financial service providers, training institutions and government will also benefit from improved coordination and capacity.
This project will directly reach at least 23,700 youth with training in technical construction skills, entrepreneurship, life skills and financial literacy. YIEDIE’s expected outcomes include increased income, new or better employment, and increased savings for 90% of the beneficiaries of the project.
The programme will run over five years by a consortium of partner organisations including Global Communities, YES-Ghana, Opportunities Industrialisation Centre Ghana (OICG), African Aurora Business Network (AABN), Artisans Association of Ghana (AAG), and HFC-Boafo in five of Ghana’s largest cities: Accra, Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi, Tema and Ashaiman.
The project beneficiaries will be typically from disadvantaged and low-income backgrounds who are out of school, unemployed or underemployed and interested in construction. YIEDIE aims at involving a greater number of young women to participate in this life changing programme.
The first phase of this programme will take off in Accra and Sekondi – Takoradi. Young people who meet YIEDIE’s requirements are encouraged to call +233 560 266 666 in Accra or +233 560 266 667 in Sekondi – Takoradi for further enquiries and registration.
