Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES-Ghana) has outdoored the latest youth initiative, YIEDIE, in Sekondi through a float. YIEDIE is an acronym for Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Employment. The five-year project aims at creating opportunities in the construction sector for young people between the ages of 17-24 who are out of school, or have completed one level of education but can neither continue nor be gainfully employed.
The inaugural float went through some principal streets of Essikado and Sekondi. The project team, made up of staff and volunteers from YES-Ghana and its implementing partner, Opportunities Industrialization Centre – Ghana (OICG), interacted with residents and commuters of Essikado, Mempeasem, Sekondi ECG area, ‘Around the Fish’, Anafo and the Sekondi market, before converging at the Sekondi Methodist Park. The team visited and interacted with shop owners, artisans, traders, drivers, commuters, and passers-by on a one-on-one basis to explain the project and answer questions related to YIEDIE.
Residents who expressed interest in acquiring construction, technical, financial, entrepreneurial and life skills under YIEDIE to register, get screened and commence their training to acquire the requisite technical skills and earn a free certificate upon completion.
Scores of residents expressed their interest in the project and lauded YES-Ghana and its partners for this positive action towards reducing youth unemployment in Ghana. Consequently, several interested enthusiastic young people were screened during the event.
