Solid Waste Management (SWM) in the Accra metropolis is at present delivered in an unsustainable manner. Due to uncontrolled urbanisation, large quantities of waste are generated daily in Accra, and this exerts pressure on an over-strained solid waste management system. Aside weak institutional capacity and inadequate financial and human resources, the city authorities face difficulties in ensuring that all the waste generated in the city is collected for disposal.

The goal of the YouthWorks! project is to engender gainful youth participation in achieving environmental sanitation service delivery in the Ashiedu-Keteke sub-metropolis.

The YouthWorks! approach to addressing the problem of poverty and unsanitary environment in Ashiedu-Keteke involves building a strong multi-stakeholder partnership with relevant actors in the community, mobilising the energies and resourcefulness of youth, and working in four key solid waste value chains.
